Geography Awareness Week

Thanks to all who took part and helped out at various times throughout the Geography Awareness week. The students got involved in a variety of activities including table quizzes, watching geography documentaries, making a Lego architect version of the Eiffle Tower and an impressive 3D jigsaw of Big Ben which lights up!  etc. We’re also working on an 1,000 piece jigsaw of Paris which we will dedicate to those who lost their lives in last weekends tragedy. It is work in progress at the moment but we hope to get it framed and displayed in the school. We will display some of our finished products next week in Room 11 and you are all welcome to call in for a look.

Thanks to all who took part in the various raffles this week. Huge congrads to Ms. Higgins who won the lotto draw last week.

Today, huge congrads to Daithi Quinn, Pierce Regan, Iarlaith Farell and Ceolan Upton who won prizes in the geography quiz and congrads to Ceolan, Marcus Sweeney, Calan Tynan, Kieran Farrell and Enda O Neill as well as staff members Martina Warde, Kate, Bernie Flaherty and Etáin who won prizes in the general raffle.

Trip go hÁrainn

Trip go hÁrainn
As part of a cross-curricular project involving Geography, Gaeilge and Physical education our transition year students braved the elements and departed for the wet and windswept Aran Islands.
Students met with local food producers where they learned about the sustainable nature of this type of food production. Local goat farmer and award winning cheese maker Gabriel Faherty explained to students the importance of traceability in food production and their “Field to Fork” ethos.
We navigated the island on bicycle, our PE teacher putting us through our paces with some students complaining that there were not enough hills to climb!!
This mode of transport gave us a great chance to get up close and personal with some of the local flora and fauna, in particular some of the seals we observed from the seal colony a couple of kilometres into our cycle.

Despite the inclement weather it was a very enjoyable trip.
