Here are the Year Two Business Studies class enjoying a tour of Caffreys Confectionery“The Chocolate Warehouse” in Walkinstown Dublin 12. The tour was a Business Studies JCSP Field Trip initiative. The experience was really worthwhile. The students received a most detailed history of the family owned business which has been in existence since 1948, the founding father; Mr. Thomas Caffrey only passed away in 2010 – he lived to the ripe old age of 92 – so chocolate must be good for you after all.
The presentation was very much business geared and the whole business model was explained to the group. The students learned of the importance of shelf space in a retail store, the importance of the marketing mix, pricing, distribution, importing, advertising, training, health and safety in the workplace, the factory production plan to mention just a few areas covered. The strategic location of the factory in terms of access to distribution channels, commuting staff, and raw material suppliers was even pointed out, something most of us took for granted. Finally the students were given the opportunity to become Willy Wonka for half an hour and got to bring away their very own handmade creations. The group were accompanied by Mr. Heneghan, Ms. Waldron and Ms. Flaherty – strict supervision is always advisable when attending a Chocolate factory. We’ve all seen what became of those poor over inquisitive fellows in that famous Roald Dahl story and I don’t mean “The Twits”; doesn’t bear thinking about really.
