Big Brother Big Sister

Archbishop McHale College is currently operating a school based mentoring programme called Big Brother Big Sister.
The programme aims to match a first year student with a transition year student.  The purpose of this match is that the two students develop a friendly and positive relationship that will ultimately benefit them both.
The Big Brother Big Sister programme is an initiative  hosted by Foróige, a National Youth Development Organisation.  Mr. Kennedy who has been trained by Big Brother Big Sister personnel then facilitates the programme along with project workers from Youth Work Ireland.

Dissolving Boundaries Programme

Dissolving Boundaries Programme

The current first year science group will be taking part in a programme called Dissolving Boundaries i.e. a cross border digital school partnership. As part of this programme pupils use a range of information and communications technologies such as video-conferencing and online discussions to complete a project based around the science syllabus with a sister school from Northern Ireland. Our pupils are paired with pupils from St. Piux X High School, Derry. Pupils will begin by exchanging personal profiles with the pupils from St. Piux to build interpersonal relationships. Working together pupils will hopefully build their own online page with such outcomes as collections of illustrated stories and research findings on well known scientists all while building a relationship with the pupils from St Piux High School.

Louise Lennox at our school

Louise Lennox (pastry and dessert Chef as seen on RTE 1 ‘The Restaurant and The Afternoon Show’) visited our school where the 1st and 2nd year students received a 2 hour cookery lesson from Louise in which they made rocky road and raspberry ice-cream, chocolate brownie flower pots, and chocolate and orange mousse. All pupils fully enjoyed the opportunity and experience of meeting and working along with a Celebrity Chef who has 16 years experience as a pastry and dessert chef.
